Appearance:
Tails is an anthropomorphic fox standing at only about 2'7" in height. His fur is yellow-orange and white, while his eyes are blue, and he wears small belts around the wrists of his white gloves as well as red and white shoes and white socks. As his nickname says, he has two tails.

Personality:
Tails is shown to be a modest, cheerful, and kindhearted person, who's highly intelligent but can lack confidence...and dislikes his given name and so goes by his nickname. He's helpful and has got a bit of an adventurous streak in him, becoming involved in the attempt to thwart pretty much every threat the world comes up against. This doesn't mean that he's looking to be a big hero though, as he's most often supporting rather than taking the lead. He can and will stand on his own when needed, proving himself capable of standing up for himself and others.

Easily self-motivated, Tails can occupy himself, and when he knows that things need to be done he rarely needs to be pushed into doing them. It doesn't matter if it's a big or small task. If nothing needs to be done and he doesn't feel like relaxing he'll find or make a way to occupy himself.

Usually mellow and tolerant of others, he tries to avoid letting things people say bother him even though he can be highly sensitive about having his skill belittled. When this happens, he takes it quietly, but it only pushes him to improve further and take his skills to the next level. He is likewise not discouraged for long by failure.

An interesting quality he possesses, is the ability to put differences aside after being at odds with someone. If that person's help is needed or it seems they've had a change of heart, he is easily willing to consider the possibility or to work alongside them...though this doesn't mean he's gullible in that sense. He can cooperate with, spend time around, or help someone whether they have his full trust or not. On a similar note, he can also respect someone regardless of his relationship with them.

Some of his less positive character quirks include: a strong fear of lightning, the occasional oversight of things he does, and often forgetting that not everyone understands technical terms. He has a great mind but it's not perfect. Some of his designs have lacked crucial things because he forgot...like landing gear in the Tornado II. And when talking about machines, he mat forget to stick to basics. At times he might also accidentally reveal things when led to believe that it's already known, which can complicate things or cause trouble.

Abilities:
Tails is classified as both a more defensive and supportive character, fast and stronger than he looks, but strongest in defense and evasion, and in technical attacks over brute strength. Being able to run faster than most beings, as well as propeller dash and fly at incredibly high speed by spinning his tails like a propeller, and swimming fairly well underwater makes him one of the most mobile characters in the series. He also capable of carrying others when he flies with no trouble. His running speed is unknown since he prefers to fly or propeller dash, but in doing either he's the third fastest character, right behind Sonic and Shadow. He can also grind on rails.

He extremely smart and good with building, improving, or disabling machines. He can fly planes, drive cars and mech, operate submarines and spaceships, and use an Extreme Gear very well. He can also learn to spot weaknesses on opponents. He also makes heavy use of dummy rings in several games, using either electrically charged or explosive ones to varying degrees of efficiency.

In the Dark Brotherhood, he created small droids that could be deployed to temporarily increase defense or restore health of allies or himself. He could also generate a temporal field that briefly induced the hyper status and granted extra action for himself or an ally. He also could throw flash grenades at non-robotic enemies to stun them.

Fighting physically, Tails relies heavily on his tails for powerful attacks since they have the most strength, but he can also spin dash like most other characters by rolling into a ball and charging.

Tails was able to use the Super Emeralds to become Hyper Tails in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles but couldn't use the Chaos Emeralds for that at the time because he was too young. Now that he's older that may not be the case. As Hyper Tails he gains a golden glow to his fur and an increase to his speed and strength. Four empowered Flickies surround him, automatically attacking any threat that comes near him even though he's temporarily invisible in this state. (I'm pretty sure this ability doesn't apply.)

History: (Sonic game continuity and time lapses aren't really defined much as Tails is said to be eight-years-old even still. Also Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood can be considered slightly AU because of the inclusion of Swatbots and a Roboticizer in the plot. Because of the ending of the game I'll also be treating it as the end of the history section)

Tails is earliest seen in the game Tails' Skypatrol where he hadn't yet met Sonic, but had to travel his island to defeat the evil Wendy Witchcart and her lackeys to save the residents from her tyranny, using only his power of flight and a magic ring he used as a throwing weapon and all around tool. After he defeated her, Tails carried her off somewhere and she was never seen again.

Sometime later, in Tails' Adventure he was napping near his research lab on Cocoa Island when an explosion woke him and he found the area burning. After a Flicky informed him that the Battle Kukku Army had found the island and was intending to steal the Chaos Emeralds for world domination, Tails set off to collect them first and defeat the army with a wide variety of items including his versatile Remote Robot. He was able to succeed, outsmarting the army's chief scientist and later destroying both the army's leader and his son before leaving their fortress to sink into the ocean.

Tails' first adventure involving Sonic is being kidnapped by Dr. Eggman(Robotnik) and being held in the Crystal Egg Zone to be used as bait to capture Sonic in Sonic 2 for the Master System. After collecting all of the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic rescued him and they went on to pursue Eggman in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Genesis. While Tails is a side character only really tags along with Sonic here, it's noteworthy that he flew Sonic up tho the Death Egg in the plane, but was shot down in the process. however, in the time it takes Sonic to defeat Eggman he had fixed the plane and caught Sonic as he was falling from the sky.

The two eventually travel to Angel Island where they were constantly interfered with by Knuckles, who had been led to believe they were the bad guys by Robotnik. Tails was again a support character for Sonic as they traveled the island to defeat Robotnik and reclaim the Chaos Emeralds stolen by Knuckles. Most noticeably, Tails carries Sonic throughout the battle with Eggman in the Marble Garden Zone because there's nowhere to land, and then flies him all the way to the Carnival Night Zone. They eventually confronted and defeated Eggman on the repaired Death Egg, causing it to crash into a volcano. Landing in Mushroom Hill Zone, the soon learned Eggman had survived and pursued him again, still being confronted by Knuckles, until Eggman stole the Master Emerald and wounded Knuckles. While Sonic confronted Eggman and Mecha Sonic, Tails retrieved the plane and was back in time to catch Sonic and the Master Emerald, which was then returned to its altar. Tails wasn't present in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1.

Sonic Adventure marked Tails' first really independent actions since befriending Sonic. In the peace, he had been in his workshop in the Mystic Ruins, researching how a Chaos Emerald might be used as a power source for his new plane. While testing it he crashed on the beach outside of Station Square and was found by Sonic. Eager to show off his work since he'd last seen his best friend, Tails talked him into coming back with him, but they were attacked by Eggman and Tils had his Emerald stolen and it was fed to a monster called Chaos.

Realizing that they had to stop Eggman from powering up Chaos further, Sonic and Tails sought out the other Emeralds. They found one in Windy Valley and another in the casino, but were knocked out by Eggman and lost one. They found one more in Ice Cap, but were then attacked by Knuckles demanding they hand over the Emeralds. It turned out that Eggman had tricked him into thinking they had pieces of the Master Emerald, and their two Emeralds were stolen and given to Chaos. They fought Chaos before Eggman escaped to his flying fortress, the Egg Carrier, and Sonic and Tails attempted to chase him there in Sonic's plane, but were shot down.

Waking alone near the temple in the Mystic Ruins Tails decided that if they were going to get to the Egg Carrier then he needed to finish his new plane. He found a Chaos Emerald and after an odd chase with the tailed frog who had swallowed it and a vision involving a female echidna, he was able to finish the plane and leave, catching up to Sonic and the Egg Carrier on Red Mountain. They crashed safely on the fortress and, though Eggman changed its shape, made it to him, now also needing to save Amy. A robot stood in their way and they defeated it, but Amy protected it because it helped her.

The Egg Carrier began to crash, so Sonic told him to take Amy and get to safety, which he did by flying her to Station Square, just in time to see a missile crash in the city but not explode. Seeing Eggman heading toward it, Tails beat him there and disarmed the missile fully so it couldn't be used anymore. Then he faced down Eggman's Egg Walker by himself and defeated it, saving the city before flying back to his workshop. It was right after though that Chaos returned and started collecting Emeralds again, completely flooding Station Square and becoming Perfect Choas before discarding the Emeralds. It was Tails who realized Chaos had only drained the negative energy from them, which meant Soic could use the positive. He and their friends cheered Sonic on as he used the energy to pacify Chaos, and then watched as he was reunited with Tikal.

Sometime between the end of Sonic Adventure and the beginning of Sonic Adventure 2, Tails was officially named a hero for protecting Station Square and awarded a Chaos Emerald. He also modified his Tornado II to be able to transform into a walking mech and a car. Sonic Adventure 2 started him off on his way to Prison Island to rescue Sonic, who had been captured by the military for stealing a Chaos Emerald from a bank, when it had really been a newcomer named Shadow. He ended up having to save Amy first though, as she had come to the island for the same reason, but was cornered by Eggman.

Once she was safe, he entered the base to search for Sonic and they escaped once he was freed and just before the island was blown up. A short while later, Eggman began a broadcast across the world demanding the leaders of the countries surrender the planet to him or he would destroy the earth. To back up his threat, he activated the Eclipse Cannon on the the abandoned space colony, A.R.K., and destroyed a large chunk of the moon. He, Sonic and Amy then had to escape the military again, but eventually he and Sonic tracked down the president to share a plan to stop Eggmen, using a replica Chaos Emerald that Tails created.

Sonic and friends managed to enter Eggman's base and board a rocket to the colony, though Knuckles almost made them crash when his Master Emerald shards were accidentally released from the cargo hold. The plan was for Tails to take the real Emerald and destroy the engines around the cannon, while Sonic destroyed the cannon by throwing the fake into it. But Eggman captured Amy and demanded the Emerald for her life. Sonic was captured in a caosule as he was going to give the fake Emerald up, Eggman revealing he knew they had a fake. In surprise Tails unintentionally confirmed that Sonic did have the fake in asking how Eggman knew Sonic had it, which Eggman hadn't known for certain. Sonic's capsule was ejected into space where it exploded and, grieving for his lost friend, Tails attacked and defeated Eggman. But soon he heard Sonic over the communicator, Sonic having survived and even accomplished his mission.

Before any real celebrations could happen, a broadcast from Dr. Gerald Robotnik, Eggman's grandfather, aired around the world declaring his vengeance on the entire planet. The colony began to fall to Earth, the impact of which would destroy the planet if it wasn't stopped. It took the combined effort of everyone including Eggman to stop the disaster, but they succeeded at the cost of Shadow's life.

Five months later saw Tails receiving a letter from Eggman stating he had a new weapon and challenging Sonic and friends to try to stop him. Perplexed, he immediately sought out Sonic with Knuckles and they set out to defeat him as a team. Their adventure also pitted them against Shadow, who had somehow survived, along Rouge who had first appeared during Sonic Adventure 2, and then a vastly powered up Metal Sonic in the end. Sometime later, in Shadow the Hedgehog, the planet became caught up in a three-way war between Eggman, the military, and the alien army known as Black Arms. Tails appeared in Circus Park, an amusement park built by Eggman using ill-gotten rings, determined to regain the rings. His plane was shot down and he was found by Shadow within the park and asked for his help in his mission. He later appeared in Central City, again asking Shadow's help, protecting the president as he escaped to a more secure area.

During the events of Sonic Battle Sonic and Tails befriended and cared for a Gizoid called Emeri, while trying to learn about him. Tails helped with teaching him about the world, and how to fight, and even attempted to defend him from threats. This included Shadow, who he fought and defeated to keep him from destroying Emeri. When interference from Eggman caused Emeri to go berserk, they had to destroy him to protect the planet.

In the Sonic Riders series, Tails was often the most informed of the heroes, and was the one who built the boards that he, Sonic, and Knuckle. He also developed a bit of a rivalry with Wave the Swallow, but this was because she tended to make a point to belittle both him and his work, which in turn only made his determination stronger. During the story he was often the calmest of his team and has the best cornering ability and the second highest top speed in the game.

Sonic the Hedgehog(2996) saw Tails first helping restore damage to a city following an attack by Eggman. When he encountered Sonic, he already knew hi friend had tried to say the princess but she'd been kidnapped by Eggman. He joined Sonic for most of the story, helping in defending the princess or creating diversions so that Sonic could get her to safety. He was also the one to both come up with a way to bring Sonic back to life when he was murdered, and the one to seek out the yellow Chaos Emerald.

Throughout the events of Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors, and Sonic Generations, Tails played the supporting role in providing Sonic with helpful information in defeating Eggman. In Unleashed, he had connections to a professor who understood the nature of the planet's being split apart and on his guidance Tails flew Sonic around the world in the Tornado so it could be fixed. In Colors, he acted as the translator, for Yacker, a Wisp seeking their help in saving his race from Eggman. He also at one point pushed Sonic out of the way of a mind control beam, being hit by it instead and nearly being forced to attack Sonic. In Generations, he was captured along with everyone else during Sonic's birthday, but was the first freed and helped Sonic discover what was going on while providing moral support along with his younger counterpart for both Sonics in their confrontation with the past and present Eggmans.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood took place two years after and unspecified victory over Eggman in Metropolis. During that battle, Sonic and friends had teamed up with the military to board Eggman's latest Egg Carrier to sabotage it. While Sonic, Knuckles, and Amy distracted Eggman, Tails disabled the flying fortress before escaping in the Tornado as it crashed in Metroplois. Eggman was eventually assumed dead and Sonic left in search of adventure. Tails remained in his workshop in Central City, becoming unrivaled in mechanical inventions and maturing and learning more independence as he began to have to deal with things such as the occasional power outage or angry bear on the loose. As time passed though, he began to find himself getting bored.

He'll be taken from this point before chapter one of Chronicles.
